Care

Care at Locust Projects: Nourishing experiences by artists, for you.

Inspired by the many ways artists across Miami-Dade have deepened their resolve to care for themselves, for each other, and for our communities, Locust Projects has launched a new program called Care, featuring local artists who work at the intersection of self-care, relational care, and/or community care. Starting this summer, six artists will create experiences at Locust Projects and beyond that nourish the whole artist, the creative force in each of us, and the communities we form and sustain.

The series kicked off on Saturday, July 10 at 2pm with Make a Masterpiece of Me, facilitated by writer, educator, and cultural worker Arsimmer McCoy.  This workshop on empowering ourselves and our communities through poetry explored ideas around objectification and personification, guiding us to envision ourselves and each other as powerful beings through writing. Arsimmer also shared her new film, A Poem for My Black Baby, made in collaboration with Terence Price.

Other artists include:

Violenta Flores, filmmaker and video artist, created an immersive visual and aural meditative experience as a calming respite for caregivers.

Houston Cypress, artist and environmental activist, will lead a deep listening ramble through diverse plant communities of Big Cypress National Preserve.

Loni Johnson, artist and educator, will invite participants to build small altars as offerings to their ancestors while contemplating the ways we navigate space. The altars will be unified into a larger piece installed as a collaborative work.

Coralina Rodriguez Meyer, artist and architect, will host her project Mother Mold: Mama Spa Botanica, starting with a live streamed talk on decolonizing birth featuring a local doula, followed by a self-care sculpture and photography workshop for pregnant BIPOC.

Emani Castillo, artist healer and housing advocate, will guide participants through embodied rituals to ground themselves and set intentions for authentic self-expression, followed by an invitation to create within the shared space of this virtual workshop.
