The LAB 2019

Group Exhibition: The LAB 2019

Join us for the opening of The LAB: Locust Art Builders.

For four weeks, 20 high school-aged artists from across Miami-Dade County worked under the mentorship of established contemporary visual artists to learn about the practical and creative aspects of mounting a public exhibition, which they developed and produced in collaboration with their peers. The LAB program encourages participants to develop ideas and produce work collaboratively, resulting in an exhibition that is produced as the result of a team effort. This invaluable opportunity allows young artists to widen their perspectives, connect with other artists and arts professionals, and gain the experience of making an exhibition in an established visual arts space.

Locust Art Builders (LAB) is made possible through lead support from the Hillsdale Fund Inc. Additional LAB funding is provided by the Kirk Foundation, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, Vhernier, and donors to the Team LAB Annual Education Fund.

Whitney Humphreys: LAB MFA: Command Center

Meet the artist Whitney Humphreys

Join us for the opening of The Command Center and meet the artist, Whitney Humphreys, a current dual Masters degree-seeking student at San Francisco Art Institute. She is the sixth student featured in our summer LAB MFA open call since 2013.

About the Artist

Whitney Humphreys is a San Francisco Bay Area artist and teacher currently pursuing a double Masters in San Fransisco Art Institute’s Dual Degree program, where she has held the position of 2018 Co-Director for the Legion of Graduate Students. Upon completion, she will earn an MFA in studio practice, with a focus in printmaking and sculptural installation, as well as an MA in the History and Theory of Contemporary Art with her thesis titled Gendered Machines. Having grown up in California with a creatively, politically, and academically driven family and community, she has been studying art her entire life. Culminating in a practice rooted deeply in processes of research, her work addresses modes of knowledge production and representation that impact constructions of identity, examined through an Intersectional Feminist lens. She has exhibited throughout the Bay Area during her career as an artist, muralist, designer, maker, event coordinator, and instructor.

Join us for a program featuring Whitney Humphreys, a current dual MA/MFA degree-seeking student at San Francisco Art Institute, in conversation with Neil Ramsay, Consulting Director of FATVillage Arts District Inc. and Founder/Facilitator of ArtsUP! Concepts, on the layers of influence impacting Humphreys' practice and current show at Locust Projects.

Following the talk will be an intimate screening inside the installation space of Desk Set, the 1957 Hepburn/Tracy screwball comedy steeped in a timely critique of traditional relationships between machines, service, information, and gender. The film accompanies both the installation and discussion as a platform for addressing structures of control and means of transmission.
