Made by Dusk is Mette Tommerup’s final installment of a trilogy of installations that follow the pilgrimage of massive, pigmented, raw canvases created in natural environments. The palette for this series is gold and grey to reflect tones in the late evening sky. The installation’s interior evokes the empyrean vastness and incorporates a spectacular golden lighting system to activate a low hanging, glowing world.
Tommerup began a performative story six years ago which narrated how her diminutive seascape paintings, with humble wills of their own and capable of conscious choice returned to their source, the sea. In two subsequent shows Ocean Loop, 2017 and Love, Ur, 2019, at Emerson Dorsch, the performative narrative grew; the paintings returned from the sea and explored life on land. Raw, uncut canvas and pigments, the foundational materials in these works, came from the sea and the earth. At Locust Projects they head for the stars and while the installation brings the heavens to space it ultimately continues a narrative where the massive canvases suggest a voyage away from earth. The tactile environment furthers a concept where paintings are “actors in their own right” as they push for reconfiguration though process and abstraction.
This carefully constructed mythos is a map by which Tommerup expresses the intersection of contemporary struggles and hierarchies while empowering the viewer to tackle challenges in society today. Tommerup invites the audience to partake in interactive elements within the show and Made by Dusk is additionally a reflection on immersive installation today. The installation is an inviting space that inspires contemplation through activity and will host community workshops and performances. One performance, Freya’s Empyrean references the Nordic goddess of love, Freya in her chariot drawn by cats.
