A Discussion on Art, Media and Technology
FREE

In conjunction with Whithervanes, our Art on the Move project by artist collective rootoftwo, Locust Projects will be hosting a panel discussion on the intersections of art, media and technology. The panel discussion will include Cezanne Charles and John Marshall of rootoftwo, Chris Barr of the Knight Foundation, and Willie Avendano of 01.

With Whithervanes, rootoftwo have created weathervanes for the twenty-first century, tracking and measuring the “climate of fear” on the internet. This discussion will highlight how artists, technologists and the media confront the realities of this new tulmultuous climate we live in.

The panel discussion will take place on Saturday, May 19th, 2018 from 5 pm to 7 pm at ALL DAY, located at 1035 N Miami Ave, Miami, FL 33136. Complimentary bites and refreshments will be provided. The talk is free and open to the public with RSVP. Space is very limited. To RSVP, click here.

ALL DAY is one of the host locations for Whithervanes. This public project is currently on view now through July 2018. The project can be seen on the building’s rooftop from street level and will be on view during the event.

The U.S. premiere of Whithervanes in Miami is made possible by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. To learn more about this project, click here.

About the Panelists

rootoftwo (Cezanne Charles + John Marshall) is a research and practice-driven hybrid design studio formed in 1998. rootoftwo work to create a condition where we can perceive ourselves, the here and now, and the future differently. rootoftwo makes social objects, experiences, and works for the public realm – typically at the scale of devices, furniture or small buildings. Their projects are designed to disrupt and reframe systems, networks and infrastructure.

Chris Barr joined Knight Foundation in July 2012. As director of arts and technology, he identifies and applies innovative technology approaches to guide Knight arts strategy. He has developed and led major foundation initiatives focused on helping institutions such as libraries and museums use technology to meet new audience demands. In addition, he has steered foundation projects that explore the impact of digital transformation on institutions and communities. His creation and leadership of the Knight Prototype Fund, a signature foundation initiative, provides a unique philanthropic avenue for media innovators to explore early stage projects.

Willie is an entrepreneur, creative technologist, hacker, educator, and new media artist. He is the Executive Director and co-founder of 01, a Miami-based education lab that empowers children to shape the world around them through the use of emerging technologies. Free and open to the public

As part of her time in the R+D / Mobile Studio Jamilah Sabur will be hosting a series of public programs. Join us May 23 at 7 pm for a screening of dana washington’s UNDER BONE. UNDER BONE is a narrated experimental-drama featuring ethereal vignettes linked by a woman's devotion, grief and ancestral evocation, as she traverses stories beneath her rib cage.

dana washington (b. 1985) explores existence, agency and the imagination through film, portraiture, text, and narration. washington examines personal history, fiction, and memory, as well as the condition of Black and queer persons, centering on representation, oppression, healing, and futurity.

In 2016, washington earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from California State University, Long Beach, and continues her practice and research in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of California, San Diego, for which she is a recipient of the Strategic Enhancement of Excellence through Diversity Fellowship.

Her video and film works have been selected for the Toronto Film Festival, Outfest Fusion LGBT People of Color Film Festival, Black Radical Imagination Showcase, Filmforum @ MOCA Los Angeles: The Familiar Unknown, and the College Art Association Conference.

Locust Projects presents Saint Cities a research project by Jamilah Sabur. For this project, Sabur has selected a team of students she has recently spent time with during her residency at Crisp Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College to join her in designing a collaborative project together. The only objective is that it must exist simultaneously across 4 Saint Cities: St. Augustine, San Diego, São Paulo, and Saint-Michel (Montreal). Sabur will occupy the R + D space May 12 – May 31 displaying the research gathered with the students. Recent works by the students will be presented in a salon-style in the R+D / Mobile Studio for the duration of her stay on site.
