SIRG Closing Program: A Higher Power hosted by Arsimmer McCoy

SIRG Closing Program: A Higher Power hosted by Arsimmer McCoy

Location:

Locust Projects

Miami, FL 33127

A Higher Power is a live performance, audio, & visual homage to Miami’s sovereign storyteller Will “Da Real One '' Bell.

Bell transformed the Spoken Word plane by cultivating spaces of belonging, through creation, space, and practice. Bell’s voice of resilience, through hard-won experience, resounds as the familial anchor for Black and brown communities across the city of Miami and beyond. Will Bell is the embodiment of Miami’s culture and artistic innovation. Bell honored the vulnerability of a people, seeking rooms that embraced expression, liberation to silenced hearts, and rest to the anxious and exhausted.  Will “Da Real One” Bell was murdered in front of the Literary Cafe on May 29th, 2011. The Cafe was one of the collective hubs Bell purchased for poetry events, workshops, and education.

Delving into the revolutionary intricacies of sound, this celebration closes the series of programs on the SIRG platform.

Join Locust Projects in celebrating the opening of three new exhibitions on view April 22 - June 18.

Featuring a new immersive installation by Taiwanese-American artist Jia-Jen Lin; a two-channel video installation by Austin-based artist R. Eric McMaster; and a video series guest curated by Italian-born, Miami-based curator and climate activist Ombretta Agró Andruff. Together, all relate to adaptation, climate change, sea-level rise, the ocean, and our relationship to Mother Earth - no better day to celebrate the opening than on Earth Day 2022!

Treading on Thin Ice contemplates human conditions under progressive catastrophes resulting from social issues and climate change. By employing the concept of landscape as traces of human history as a battleground and an extension of the human body, Jia-Jen Lin presents a post-landscape where nature, human activities, and materiality intersect.

Drift is a two-channel video installation featuring two musicians playing an original, reactive composition as they are set adrift in the ocean on separate, custom-built rafts. As the musicians physically drift away from one another, their ability to hear each other diminishes causing the duet to slowly fall apart.

The Sea was walking the earth with a heavy heel is the fifth in a series of guest curated video exhibitions in Locust Projects’ Screening Room that launched in fall 2019. Guest curated by Ombretta Agró Andruff, ARTSail Residency and Research Initiative, the exhibition features videos by Ursula Biemann, Atul Bhalla, Tania Candiani, Shezad Dawood, and Miguel Sbastida. Water, in all its beauty, might, and potential menace, is what connects the five videos presented in the exhibition.
