She has written essays for several catalogues and journals, as well as books on artists Charline von Heyl, Trisha Donnelly, Stephen Prina, and Matthew Ritchie. She is currently working on a major survey exhibition of sculpture in fiber, and a survey of Arlene Shechet.

Porter obtained her BA in art history from Barnard College, Columbia University in 1994, and went on to obtain an MA in critical and curatorial studies from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2004. Prior to joining ICA Boston in January 2011, she was curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia from 2005 to 2010, and from 1998 to 2001 she was curator at Artists Space in New York.
