Join us at The DILL (Knight Digital Innovation Lounge) for transdisciplinary artist and designer Dimitry Saïd Chamy's exploration of databases, tables, and lists as tools, cultural artifacts, and materials for art creation. We will begin with a primer on the fundamentals of databases and how these elements connect artists’ practical and conceptual concerns and tools for artistic expression.
Artists will learn how to use a database to create a catalog raisonné using a customizable online template designed by Chamy that can be tailored to their own practices. Chamy believes alphabets are among the oldest and most consequential examples of collective databases. Participants will be invited to engage in Chamy’s ArtistFont project to create a collective hand-made digital alphabet. All participants will get a copy of the font.
The evening will culminate with a performance by the ingenious composer, performer, technologist, artphibian, and plant lover Juraj Kojš. His Orchid Music project, in which Chamy has performed, synthesizes nature, science, and art by using data sets of the DNA sequences of endangered orchids to create music that celebrates biodiversity and cross-cultural pollination.
